  • Julian Partin , Imperial County Sheriff’ Dept

    Deputy Sheriff Julian Abraham Partin | Imperial County Sheriff's Office, California Imperial County Sheriff's Office, California

    Deputy Partin was shot and killed by a bar hall owner who was upset about investigations that Deputy Partin was leading. Deputy Partin had been appointed a deputy sheriff the previous October and was attempting to clean up the town of Winterhaven. Deputy Partin made complaints about the suspect’s pool and gambling hall to the sheriff and was attempting to have it closed down.
    As Deputy Partin walked from his home to a nearby store, the suspect confronted him and shot him with a .32 caliber handgun. The suspect was convicted of Deputy Partin’s murder and was sentenced to life.Deputy Partin had been with the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office for only four months and was survived by his wife and children. One of Deputy Partin’s sons, Policeman C. M. Partin, was killed in the line of duty on January 23, 1927, while serving with the Los Angeles Police Department.

    Traffic Officer Frank William Hunter | Holtville Police Department, California Holtville Police Department, California

    Officer Frank Hunter was killed in a motorcycle accident while attempting to stop a speeder on the Holtville Highway, near the Alamo River Bridge. As he rounded a curve on the roadway his motorcycle went out of control, crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic, and struck an oncoming vehicle.
    He was transported to Holtville Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
    Officer Hunter had served with the agency for one year. He was survived by his wife, son, and two daughters. His son served as a state traffic officer.

  • Ivan Null , Imperial County Sheriff’s Dept

    Deputy Sheriff Ivan Ernest Null | Imperial County Sheriff's Office, California Imperial County Sheriff's Office, California

    Deputy Null was shot and killed while investigating a robbery of a store the previous evening. Deputy Null had approached a parked vehicle to question its three occupants about the robbery. As he looked into the window he was shot twice by one of the suspects who was armed with a rifle. All three suspects were eventually arrested.
    All three suspects, ages 20, 22, and 23, were convicted of first degree murder on November 20, 1935, and sentenced to life in prison

    Patrolman Charles Strawhun was accidentally shot and killed by a fellow officer.
    Patrolman Strawhun was killed by a fellow officer while they were practicing quick draws. The officers had just returned to the police station from a pistol range, the other officer had only been on the force two months, neglected to take one bullet from his cylinder before they began drawing on each other. The gun went off and Patrolman Strawhun was fatally wounded.

    Deputy Benjamin Solomon succumbed to injuries sustained two months earlier when his patrol car was struck by Southern Pacific Railroad train. The accident occurred while he was returning from dropping off a prisoner at Chino State Prison.
    Deputy Solomon was survived by his wife and six children.

    Deputy Sheriff Milton Raymond Smalling | Imperial County Sheriff's Office, California Imperial County Sheriff's Office, California

    Deputy Milton Smalling was killed when his service weapon discharged after falling to the ground. The discharged round struck him in the chest. He was removing equipment from his patrol car when the accident occurred.
    Deputy Smalling was survived by his wife, son, and daughter.

    Deputy Edwards was killed in an automobile accident while on patrol.

    Sergeant Richard Romero was killed in a helicopter accident while working on a multi-agency narcotics task force. A car was spotted in a canyon and the helicopter began to descend when its rotor blades struck power lines and caused it to crash.
    Sergeant Romero was a 14-year veteran of the Imperial County Sheriff’s Office.

  • J. Leonard Speer, Calipatria Police Dept (Former Imperial County Sheriff),

    Chief of Police James Leonard Speer | Calipatria Police Department, California Calipatria Police Department, California

    Chief of Police James Speer was shot and killed after responding to a call at an equipment yard on the outskirts of Calipatria, a tiny town in Imperial County. Chief of Police Speer was found dead along with the mother of the suspect. The suspect had managed to gain control of Chief Speer’s weapon and shot him in the chest.
    The man fled across the United States – Mexico border where he was apprehended by Mexican authorities. He was returned to the United States where he was convicted of both murders and sentenced to death.
    Chief Speer had served as chief of the Calipatria Police Department for 10 years and had previously served with the Brawley Police Department, Calexico Police Department, and Imperial County Sheriff’s Department. He had a total of 40 years of law enforcement service. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and grandchildren.
